Vet Visit

The vet was called to give mum and baby an initial health check to make sure both were ok! The vet was pleased that Pandora had passed all her after birth which is extremely important so to avoid infection! The vet listened to Russells heart, checked his mouth and general body condition and was happy that he was a healthy foal!
The most important thing was for Russell to suckle from mum, which, after many clumsy attempts Russell successful managed to latch onto mum and suckle some of her most vital first milk, colostrum. One factor that makes colostrum milk invaluable to the newborn is a high concentration of antibodies vital in warding off disease.
The vet also informed staff that they had to clean Russells umbilical cord twice per day for the next 5-6 days with an antimicrobial preparation (hibiscrub) to avoid him getting any infections!
